One-Year GCSE Programmes in East Grinstead

Expert teaching, small groups and a complete pathway to the final examination

Better EdSpace offers supportive, academically rigorous GCSE and International GCSE programmes for home-educated learners and young people seeking a different route through their qualifications.

Our one-year courses combine expert small-group teaching with structured independent work, practical experience, regular feedback and thorough examination preparation. Learners study at our welcoming education and approved examination centre in the heart of East Grinstead, completing the entire journey from their first lesson to their final examination with us.

GCSE subjects starting September 2026

We are offering the following one-year courses for examination in summer 2027:

  • GCSE English Language – AQA

  • GCSE Mathematics – Pearson Edexcel

  • GCSE Biology – AQA

  • GCSE Chemistry – AQA

  • GCSE Physics – AQA

  • Cambridge IGCSE Marine Science

Learners may study an individual subject or combine several subjects to create a

programme suited to their goals, existing qualifications and future plans.

Continuing two-year courses

The following classes are entering the second year of an existing two-year programme:

  • GCSE English Literature – AQA

  • GCSE Geography – AQA

  • GCSE History – AQA

These classes may be suitable for a learner entering Year 11 who has already completed the first year of the relevant GCSE course at school or with another provider. Admission will depend on the specification previously studied, the topics already covered and the learner’s readiness to join the programme.

We will not be starting new two-year English Literature, Geography or History courses in September 2026.

What is included?

Each GCSE programme is designed as a complete course rather than a series of disconnected tuition sessions.

The course fee includes:

  • scheduled weekly teaching at the contact hours shown in the timetable

  • structured follow-up work for learners to complete independently

  • all essential learning materials and course resources

  • practical work, including the required practical activities for science GCSEs

  • coursework or non-examined assessment support where this forms part of the qualification

  • regular topic tests and progress assessments

  • marking and individual feedback

  • examination-question practice and revision materials

  • mock examinations and preparation for working under examination conditions

  • ongoing monitoring of progress

  • registration with the relevant awarding body

  • entry for the final GCSE or International GCSE examination

  • sitting the final examination at Better EdSpace

Because Better EdSpace is both the course provider and an approved examination centre, learners can sit their final examinations in familiar surroundings with staff who already know them. Families do not need to arrange a separate private-candidate examination centre or pay an additional examination-entry fee.

How the programme works

Most GCSE subjects include two hours of direct teaching each week, usually delivered as two one-hour lessons or one two-hour session.

GCSE Mathematics includes three taught hours each week, reflecting the breadth of the course and the importance of regular mathematical practice. English Literature, which is a continuation class for the existing second-year cohort, has one 90-minute session each week.

Contact hours are supported by purposeful independent work. Learners may be asked to consolidate new knowledge, complete written work, practise examination questions, revise previous content or prepare for the next lesson.

A one-year GCSE is an intensive programme. Taught sessions alone cannot replace the full course of study: regular attendance and completion of independent work are essential. We provide the structure, teaching, resources and feedback learners need, while gradually helping them develop the organisation and independence required for success.

Small-group teaching with individual attention

Our classes are deliberately small. This allows teachers to identify gaps, adapt explanations, respond to questions and give learners meaningful feedback on their work.

We combine clear, explicit teaching with discussion, investigation, practical work and opportunities to apply knowledge. Learners are supported to understand their subject, not simply memorise enough material to pass an examination.

Better EdSpace is particularly suited to young people who benefit from:

  • a smaller, calmer learning environment

  • strong relationships with their teachers

  • clear structure without the pressures of a large school

  • individual attention and responsive teaching

  • support to rebuild confidence following disrupted education

  • an academically ambitious but emotionally supportive approach

Science GCSEs with practical experience

Practical science is an integral part of our Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Marine Science programmes.

Learners have opportunities to develop practical skills, work with scientific equipment, investigate questions and connect theoretical knowledge with real observations. Relevant required practical activities are incorporated into the course rather than treated as an optional extra.

This is particularly valuable for home-educated learners, who can otherwise find it difficult to access suitable laboratory facilities and specialist practical teaching.

Is a one-year GCSE suitable for my child?

A one-year course may be suitable for a learner who:

  • is ready to work at GCSE level

  • can attend consistently throughout the academic year

  • is willing to complete regular independent work

  • wishes to focus on a smaller number of qualifications

  • has left school during Key Stage 4 and needs a new route to examinations

  • is home educated and would benefit from structured subject teaching

  • needs a smaller, more supportive learning environment

  • already has some relevant knowledge but needs a coherent programme leading to an examination

We consider each learner individually. Before offering a place, we may arrange an informal discussion or initial assessment to understand the learner’s previous experience, current working level, support needs and intended progression route.

Fees

The fee includes teaching, learning materials, practical work, assessment, marking and feedback, revision support, examination entry and sitting the final examination at Better EdSpace.

Payments run from September 2026 to May 2027 inclusive.

There is no separate examination-entry charge for learners completing the programme with us. We absorb differences between awarding-body fees so that learners are not restricted to qualifications chosen simply because they are less expensive to administer.

Frequently Asked Questions

£150-2.png
Can my child take just one GCSE with you?

Yes. Learners may enrol for one subject or combine several subjects, provided the timetable and overall workload are suitable.

Are examination fees included?

Yes. Registration with the awarding body, examination entry and sitting the final examination at Better EdSpace are all included in the programme fee.

Are these online courses?

No. These are taught, in-person courses at our learning and examination centre in East Grinstead. Learners complete structured independent work between their teaching sessions.

Do learners receive homework?

Learners receive purposeful follow-up work appropriate to the subject and stage of the course. Completing this work is an important part of an intensive one-year programme.

Are science practicals included?

Yes. Relevant practical work and required practical activities are incorporated into our science programmes.

Can my child join English Literature, Geography or History?

These subjects are entering the second year of an existing two-year course. They may be suitable for a learner entering Year 11 who is transferring from a school or another provider, but we will need to check that the specification and previously covered content are compatible.

Can you support learners with additional needs?

We welcome conversations with families about each learner’s individual needs. Our small-group, relationship-centred environment can be particularly helpful for young people who have found larger or more pressured settings difficult.

We will always consider carefully whether the programme and the support we can provide are appropriate for the individual learner.

Enquire about a GCSE place

Choosing GCSEs can feel complicated, particularly when a young person is home educated, has left school or needs a more individual route through Key Stage 4.

We are happy to discuss subject choices, previous learning, workload and future plans with families before enrolment.
